What would you do about winter tires?

My winters (Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3) are at the end of their life going by the DOT date code. I have roughly 7/32 of tread left on them. I was considering just running them the rest of the year to kill them, since there’s still usable tread there, even if they’re not the ideal tire for the summer. I'd probably put about 14k on the tires between now and next winter.

The car in question is a 2015 Civic, and I drive normal for the most part (no autocrosses or anything like that). Should I just leave them on and kill them, or switch back to my all seasons and trash the winters now?

Since you live somewhere that winter tires are necessary, dry rot isn’t as much of an issue as someplace in the desert. A few extra months won’t make much difference; I’d drive on them until they give up the ghost.

First, what are the tires? Not all winter tires are born equal in term of dry weather driving or in term of hot weather driving...

My guess is that you can finish them during the summer, no problem at all... Sure, many will scream heresy at me for saying that, but if you’re a safe driver all day, all the time, driving with crappy winter tires all year long won’t do much of a difference... You won’t get much grip and it will feel “sloppy” but nothing “too bad”. Losing grip will still be very progressive and you will feel when the tires start to loose grip.

Better have crappy winter tires during summer than dead summer tires during summer...

Just keep a look out for dry rotting and other damage, and keep on driving. i bought some 10-ish year olds that were fine, but after a year the dry rot got really bad, and they were leaking too...

The tires in question are Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3. The other set of tires I have on the OEM wheels only have about 9k miles on them, so it's not really an either/or option. I just kind of hate the thought of getting rid of the winters when they have some decent treadlife still.

Yeah, these are good as far as dry rotting goes. I've had these tires for about 4 years now, and I've always keep them in my climate controlled basement.

One thing I’ve learned in my professional career: safety margins. That date on your tire is not when your tires will become unsafe. Far from it. If the MFG put THAT date on your tires, they would be buried in lawsuits from idiots that ran past it and experiences tire failure. If you’ve stored them properly, keep on trucking. No worries at all.

Just because I’m a little stickler, I would swap the all seasons back on and save those winter tires for any late fall emergencies that pop up while they still have good tread life.

By me we’ve had some weird snow storms that have happened pretty early on in the year (Halloween, Thanksgiving) and having a set of winter wheels on hand that are quick and easy to swap out would be ideal, even if they’re getting low on tread. I wouldn’t trash them too early, it’s one of those ‘need and not have’ vs ‘have and not need’ situations to me.

i think they reformulate the tires to prevent them from getting too hard in the cold so I would imagine this would make them extra soft for the summer and could possibly increase your chance of a blowout or something. Just a guess i dont really know for sure.

now u have an excuse to rallycross this summer.

Can you switch back to your all seasons and get another winter out of them? I’d be less concerned about date codes if they’re not rotted and have enough healthy tread left.

I’d just use ‘em up, personally. I’ve run snow tires in summer before and they’re OK on dry pavement (not so much on wet, but not to the point where I’d call it dangerous). They will wear extremely quickly, of course, but obviously you’re aware of that.

THIS. The Blizzaks that I have on my M3 are fine all year round, other than the fact that it’s like driving on marshmallows.

The yoko IceGuard’s that are on the S3 are trash, I can’t wait to get them off the car. They are like ice skates if the road is wet and the temp is above 50f.

You make a great point. Treadlife wise I probably have another season (maybe even two) on these tires. Seems like the smart money is in swapping back to the all seasons and giving these another go next year.

I used to have a tire swing when I was a kid. My sister and I used to twist each other around and around until the rope was really tight and then let go. You could get some wicked speed on a tire swing.

I'm kind of afraid of Nissan's CVTs. When I had my cube, it just didn't inspire much confidence to me that it would be around for a long time. For your sake I hope my hesitation is unwarranted.
